Moundridge Youth Drowns in Effort To Save Companion

Halstead, Kan. — Sixteen-year-old George Koehn, son of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Koehn of Moundridge, drowned in the rain-swollen Little Arkansas River here Monday afternoon.

The youth jumped into the churning waters in an effort to save a companion, 17-year-old Johnny Tatro, who had been swept over the dam after going swimming alone in the fast-flowing river. The Koehn youth went under immediately, and the body was recovered from the bottom of the river several hours later.

Meanwhile, Michael O'Grady of Halstead, who was working nearby, went in after the Tatro youth and finally brought him to safety with the aid of others on the river bank.
