CORNELIUS C. KLIEWER
Cornelius C. Kliewer, son of C. J. and Agnes (Huebert) Kliewer, was born on Dec. 6, 1902, in Henderson, Neb. After attending public school in Henderson, at the age of 15 years he moved with his parental family to Saskatchewan, Canada. There he enjoyed his teenage years which he often referred to as some of the happiest years of his life. When he became 21 years of age he again returned to Henderson, where he married and made his home.
He was baptized upon confession of his faith by Rev. John F. Epp on June 1, 1925, and joined the Bethesda Mennonite Church where he maintained his membership until his death. Exactly four months after his baptism, on Oct. 1, 1925, he was married to Marie Dick. This union was blessed with one son.
He offered himself and his services by doing custodial work in the Henderson Grade and High school, the Henderson Hospital, and finally he became the chief custodian at Bethel College, North Newton, Kan. His work was always hard, but he did little complaining.
He enjoyed people and traveling. His greatest joy, however, was singing. He sang in many quartets and octets, as well as choruses. His fine bass voice always added quality and inspiration to the songs he helped to sing. He was a good provider and example for his family.
In the week before his death he had spent many hours working in his home in Henderson remodeling it for his retirement years. He had just retired on June 13, 1969, and was planning to spend his time in traveling, fishing, and working part-time.
Evidently he felt no pain until the day before his death. He then mentioned that he had chest and arm pains. He died of a heart attack on Monday evening while writing on a desk. He reached the age of 66 years, six months, and 17 days.
He leaves to mourn his departure his loving wife, Marie; his son and daughter-in-law, Leon and Mary of Newton, Kan.; three brothers, John C. of Fresno, Calif., Peter C. and Claus C. of Saskatoon, Sask.; four sisters, Martha (Mrs. David) Doerksen of Hepburn, Sask., Miss Mary Kliewer of Saskatoon, Ida (Mrs. Joe) Schmidt of Dalmeny, Sask., and Nettie (Mrs. Oscar) Woodward of York, Neb., as well as many other relatives and friends.
