JULIA KLEINSASSER

Julia Kleinsasser was born July 16, 1902, to Peter J. and Mary (Kaufman) Schrag near Marion, S. D. She attended rural school Dist. 15 and Freeman (S. D.) Academy.

She was baptized by Alfred Waltner on Aug. 31, 1919, and became a member of Salem-Zion Mennonite church on Sept. 15, 1920. She was married to Joseph K. Kleinsasser by John Peters.

On July 3, 1924, during revival meetings held by John Penner, she was born again, and later joined the Hutterthal Mennonite church.

In November 1962, she and her husband sold their farm and in 1963 retired in Freeman. He died Sept. 6, 1976. She lived in her own home until October 1984, when she moved to Salem home.

During her last years, she suffered from Alzheimer’s disease. She died Jan. 31, 1991, at age 88.

Surviving are one son, Amos and wife Kathryn (Hofer) Kleinsasser; eight daughters, Adella and husband Erwin R. Gross, Mary Wollman, Sarah and husband Eli J. Stahl, Bertha and husband Eldon P. Hofer, Katheryn and husband Johnny Graber, JoAnn and husband William Stahl, Fern and husband Clyde Kaufman, Ruby and husband Gary Hughes; a daughter-in-law, Lavonne and husband Duane Schrag; two sisters, Minnie Deckert and Selma and husband Felix Preheim; three brothers, Otto, Lloyd and wife Joyce and LeRoy and wife Evelyn; a sister-in-law, Esther (Mrs. Ben) Schrag; 33 grandchildren and 36 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her daughter Iva, son Silas, three sons-in-law, one great-grandson, a brother and a sister.

Funeral services were held Feb. 4, 1991, at Hutterthal Mennonite Church, Freeman, with Ken Peterson and Phil Glanzer officiating.
