DIETRICH G. KLASSEN
Dietrich G. (Dick) Klassen, son of D. U. and Mary Klassen, was born near Hillsboro, Kansas June 13, 1886. He died at Goessel, Kansas March 4, 1952, age 65 years, eight months and 20 days. He grew to young manhood and received his elementary education in a country school in Marion county, Kansas.
As a young man he came to Newton to work and after a few years he acquired a greenhouse and maintained the business of a florist in the city of Newton. Here he acquired the familiar name of "Greenhouse" Klassen.
He was baptized on confession of faith in the Lord Jesus Christ as his personal Saviour by Elder Jacob Toews on May 23, 1915, and became a member of the First Mennonite church of Newton, Kansas and remained a member until his death.
On September 15, 1915, he was married to Miss Tina Schmidt of Goessel, Kansas. One daughter was born to this union. Mrs. Klassen died on November 29, 1945.
He was married a second time on January 31, 1958, to Miss Emma Hanke.
Mr. Klassen was used to hard work and enjoyed working. He was of an inventive mind and devised a number of practical labor saving devices. He was a lover of plants and flowers and was happy in growing them.
He contributed freely to several mission causes in which he was interested. He loved music and frequently sang at his work or while driving the car. The hymns "At the Cross," "Jesus Loves Me," "Safe in the Arms of Jesus," and "In dem Himmel ist Ruh" used at his funeral, were chosen not as funeral songs, but because they were his favorite songs.
He leaves to mourn his departure his wife, Mrs. Emma Klassen, his daughter Martha, Mrs. Marion Hiebert and her husband, three grandchildren, all of Newton; two sisters, Mrs. A. G. Duke of El Portal, Calif. and Mrs. Tena Jenicke, Glendale, Calif.; four brothers, John of Hope, Kansas, Samuel and Pete of El Portal, Calif., and Herman of Kinsley, Kansas, besides nieces and nephews.
