Mrs. Herbert R. Kaufman, 51, fifth grade teacher at the Hesston Grade School, died unexpectedly Sunday afternoon in Mercy Hospital at Moundridge after a brief illness. Funeral services were held Wednesday forenoon at the First Mennonite Church of Christian in Moundridge, with Rev. Ralph W. Weber in charge. Mrs. Kaufman was the former Helen Hess of Hesston. She is survived by her husband, a daughter Marilyn and son James of the home, four sisters and three brothers.

HELEN RUTH KAUFMAN

Helen Ruth (Hess) Kaufman was born on March 21, 1910 at Hesston, Kansas, the daughter of A. L. and Anne (Pfautz) Hess. She was baptized upon her confession of faith and received into the membership of the Hesston Mennonite Church.

She attended Hesston Grade School, Hesston College, and Goshen College, Goshen, Ind. She received the A. B. Degree from Bethel College,North Newton, Kansas. She taught rural and city elementary schools for many years — 1930 to 1938, 1939 to 1941, and 1954 until the time of her death.

She married Herbert R. Kaufman on June 8, 1941, and joined the First Mennonite Church of Christian, Moundridge, shortly afterward. Their marriage was blessed with a daughter, Marilyn, and a son, James.

Relatives include three brothers, Rev. Elmer Hess of Pennsylvania, A. L. Hess of Wichita, Kansas, C. S. Hess of ElDorado, Kansas; four sisters; Vera (Mrs. Fred Billau) of Denver, Colo., Grace (Mrs. Rollin Erb) of Seaside, Calif., Miss Jennie Hess, Hesston, Kansas, and Miss Mary Hess, San Francisco, Calif.

She passed to her eternal home on Sunday, Sept. 17, 1961, after a brief illness. Memorial services were held on Sept. 20 in the First Mennonite Church of Christian, Moundridge, Kansas.
