Retired Freeman Couple Killed in Collision Of Pickup, Semi Truck
Freeman, S.D. — A Freeman man and his wife were killed Jan. 3 when their compact pickup was struck by a semi-tractor trailer hauling small alfalfa bales about seven miles south of Freeman on Highway 81.
According to South Dakota Highway Patrol Officer David Heeren, Christ J. and Delilah Kaufman were driving north when Kaufman made a U-turn into the path of the semi, which hit the Kaufman vehicle broadside. The driver of the semi, Robert Jensen, Meckling, S.D., was uninjured.
“He (Jensen) hit his brakes and honked his horn, but apparently they didn’t see or hear him,” said Heeren.
Kaufman was 76. His wife was 66.
Funeral services for the Kaufmans were held Jan. 7 at Salem-Zion Mennonite Church, rural Freeman.
