Newton and Vicinity

• The collision of a Buhler school bus and a car at the intersection of Dutch Avenue and the Burrton Road six miles east of Buhler last Friday afternoon resulted in the deaths of a 60-year-old Andale woman and two of her grandchildren and injured 11 persons, three seriously. The accident also apparently contributed to the death of a fourth person, David Kaufman, 74, of Moundridge, who suffered a fatal heat attack when he stopped at the accident scene. The other dead are Mrs. Mervine A. Yakshaw, and Lance Yakshaw, 9, and Rachel Yakshaw, 3, also of Andale, whose parents were on a trip to New Mexico. Hospitalized were Mrs. Lois A. Parsons, 28, of Andale, driver of the car; Brian Yakshwa [sic Yakshaw], 8, brother of the two children who were killed; and Sheldon L. Angstrom, 38, driver of the bus and coach of the Buhler High cross country team. Eight members of the team were passengers in the bus and escaped with minor injuries when the vehicle turned over on it stop after the collision. Funeral services for Mr. Kaufman were held Monday afternoon at the Eden Mennonite Church, with Rev. Walter Neufeld in charge. He leaves his widow, the former Helen Graber; three sons, Ralph of Denver and Merlin and Harold of Moundridge; two daughters, Mrs. Virgil Goering of Galva and Mrs. Elvin Schrag of Moundridge; eight grandchildren; two brothers, Dan D. of North Newton and C. D. of Moundridge; and a sister, Mrs. Paul P. Goering of Moundridge.
