• Christian H. Kaufman, 71, a lifetime resident of the Moundridge community, died there Tuesday in Mercy Hospital, after a three-month illness. Funeral services are to be held Thursday afternoon at the Eden Mennonite Church, of which he was a member. Among the survivors are the widow; a daughter, Mrs. Ethel Helmer, Burns; sons, Virgil and Howard, Moundridge, Dr. Leland, Winfield, Delmar, Bennett, Colo.; brothers, Dr. Ed G., now in India, Ray, Newton, and Paul, Moundridge; sisters, Mrs. Emma Stucky and Mrs. Elsie Schrag, Moundridge.

C. H. KAUFMAN

Christian H. Kaufman, son of John P. and Carolina Schrag Kaufman, was born on Dec. 25, 1893 on a farm northwest of Moundridge, Kan. He attended the Peaceful and Pioneer Grade Schools and the Hoffnungsau Day School. On the confession of his personal Christian faith, On June 20, 1909, he was baptized by Rev. C. J. Goering and became a member of the Eden Mennonite Church where he remained a faithful member until his death.

He was united in marriage to Lydia Flickner on May 2, 1915. They spent their entire 50 years, seven months and 19 days of married life in McPherson County, Kansas, farming west of Moundridge in the Turkey Creek Valley for 43 years, then retiring in Moundridge in 1958. On May 2 of this year, they celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. To this union were born one daughter and four sons.

Carrying on the tradition established by his immigrant, pioneering parents and parents-in-law, he along with his faithful wife maintained a continuing interest and support in the work of the mission and education programs of the Mennonite Church. His deep faith in his religious experience was manifested by his regular church attendance and teaching in his family the principles of the Christian faith and the beliefs of the Mennonite Church.

His interest and support in the area of education included not only regional districts, but also Christian education in general and Bethel College in particular. This is verified by the fact that during every year between 1941 through 1959, one of his five children was enrolled as a student at Bethel College.

For the first 71 years of his life he enjoyed near perfect health. After an illness of almost three months including major surgery two and a half months ago, he quietly and peacefully passed to his eternal reward at 2:00 p.m. on Dec. 21, 1965 in Mery [sic Mercy] Hospital Moundridge, at the age of 71 years, 11 months, and 27 days.

Survivors include his wife, Lydia; one daughter Ethel and her husband Ed Heimer of Burns, Kan.; four sons, Virgil and wife Vernell, and Howard and wife Neva of Moundridge, Kan., Leland and wife Joan of Winfield, Kan., and Delmer and wife Donna of Bennett, Colo.; 18 grandchildren; three brothers, Dr. Ed G. of North Newton, Kan. (recently of New Delhi, India), Ray J. of Newton, Paul D. of Moundridge; and two sisters, Emma Stucky and Elsie Schrag of Moundridge.

Preceding him in death were two grandchildren, Keith Allen and Jeannie Marie Kaufman; his parents; two brothers, Rev. John E. and George who died in infancy; one sister, Sophia; six brothers-in-law, and three sisters-in-law.

The memorial service was held from the Eden Mennonite Church, Moundridge on Dec. 23, 1965, at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Arnold Nickel officiating. — The Family.
