MRS. EMMA KAUFFMAN

A memorial service for Mrs. Emma Kauffman, formerly of the Garden City community, was held Wednesday Dec. 18, in the Chapel of the Chimes, Inglewood Park Cemetery, California, with Rev. D. Zehr officiating.

Mrs. Kauffman, widow of the late John L. Kauffman, died in the Osteopathic Hospital at Riverside, Calif. on Saturday, Dec. 14, at the age of 87 years.

Mrs. Kauffman was the former Emma Helmuth, daughter of John and Katherine Helmuth. Her birth occurred Feb. 2, 1870, at Wheatland, Mo. At an early age she, with her family, moved to Cass County, Mo., where she united with the Sycamore Grove Mennonite Church near Garden City, later transferring her membership to the Calvary Mennonite church in Los Angeles, Calif.

Emma Helmuth and John Lincoln Kauffman were united in marriage Dec. 27, 1888. They moved to Harrisonville, where he where he was employed in a local iron foundry. Three years later he opened a machine shop and foundry in Garden City, and later established the electric light plant there. In 1935 Mr. and Mrs. Kauffman moved to southern California where he died Nov. 18, 1947, in South Gate, Calif. at the age of 83 years.

Mrs. Kauffman was the mother of five children, two sons and three daughters. Preceding her in death were five brothers, three sisters, her husband, and a son, Roy L. Kauffman, who died just a few months ago.

Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Emery (Pearl) Schrock of Garden City, Mo9., Mrs. Oscar (Sadie) W. Miller of Harrisonville, and Mrs. Maurice (Beulah) Cameron, San Bernardino, Calif.; a son Clarence of Riverside, Calif.; a sister, Mrs. Amanda Schrock, Harrisonville; 16 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, other relatives and many friends.
