Paxman from Kansas Killed in Singapore Traffic Accident

Karl [sic Carl] Edward Kauffman, 23, who had just completed three years as a Pax worker in the Far East, was fatally injured in a traffic accident in Singapore, Malaysia on Sept. 15.

Word of the tragedy was received by the young man's parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Kauffman of Haven, Kan., from the American consulate in Washington, D. C.

Details of the accident were not learned, except that the youth was riding a motorcycle when fatally injured. The parents had earlier received word from him that he had purchased the motorcycle and planned to ride it as far as India on his return trip to the homeland.

The body is being returned to the United States, and funeral services are as yet indefinite.

During his three-year overseas alternative service assignment under the MCC, Karl [sic Carl] spent one year in Hong Kong and two years in Vietnam. In the latter country he had been purchasing agent and business manager for a small Christian hospital. He was a member of the Yoder Mennonite Church and attended Hesston College.

Surviving in addition to the parents are three sisters, Mrs. Elmer Steider of Denver, Colo., Mrs. William Brenneman of Warsaw, Ind., and Mrs. Dale Martin of Burrrton, Kan.

Services for Far East Pax Worker Held Monday at Yoder, Kan.

Haven, Kan. — Funeral services for Carl Edward Kauffman, 23, fatally injured in a traffic accident in Singapore on Sept. 15, were conducted Monday afternoon at the Yoder Mennonite Church near Yoder. Rev. Edward Yutzy, the pastor, and Rev. Peter B. Wiebe of Hesston officiated.

The young man, son of Mr. and Mrs. Alpha J. Kauffman, had completed three years of Pax service in the Far East on Sept. 8. He was beginning a four-month tour of Asia by motorcycle when his cycle collided with a truck. He lived three hours after the accident.

Carl had served one year in Hong Kong and two years in Vietnam. He had been administrator of the Vietnam Christian service Hospital at Nha Trang before his release. In letters to his parents he had especially mentioned the hospital's need for medical supplies and equipment, and the family suggests memorial gifts for that purpose.

Carl lost his life in a motorcycle accident on Sept. 15 in Singapore, Malaysia. He had just completed a three-year assignment which included one year of service in Hong Kong and two years in Vietnam. Contemplating a future assignment, he was touring Southeast Asia at the time the accident occurred, particularly seeking out needy areas.

Carl was an alumnus of Hesston Academy and attended college one year prior to entering the Pax program.

Because of his intense interest in the needs of Vietnam and particularly that of the Evangelical hospital in Nha Trang, a memorial fund is being set up by his parents.
