EARLY-DAY SETTLER IN KANSAS AND OKLAHOMA CALLED BY DEATH

Meno, Okla. — Funeral services were conducted July 31 at the New Hopedale Mennonite Church for Peter S. Kane, early day settler in Kansas and Oklahoma. He died at a convalescent home in Fairview on July 28, two days before his 88th birthday.

Mr. Kane was born in Polish Russia and came to America with his parents in 1874. The family settled in Lonetree Township, McPherson County, Kan. in 1875. In 1894 he moved to a farm near Ringwood, Okla. and later farmed near Meno.

The funeral services were in charge of Rev. Ben J. Nickel, assisted by Rev. Reuben Koehn and Rev. A. C. Siebert.

PETER S. KANE

Peter S. Kane, son of Samuel and Eva Unruh Kane, was born on July 30, 1868, in Poland, Russia and passed away at the Barnum Convalescent Home in Fairview, Okla. on July 28, 1956.

He came to America with his parents, arriving in Philadelphia on Christmas Day, 1874. His home in America, however, was not to be in Philadelphia. On Jan. 1, 1875, he accompanied his parents to Lonetree Township in McPherson County, Kansas, settling on a farm near Moundridge. He was not privileged to receive much education but through reading, self-study, and experience he attained a good, workable knowledge. During his early years he gave assistance to many who came to him for advice.

On Easter Day, 1881, he was baptized in the Church of God in Christ, Mennonite. Almost eight years later, on Jan. 26, 1889, he was married to Lena Schmidt, and they shared the joys and sorrows of married life for 45 years and five months. In August 1894 they moved to a farm north of Ringwood and six years later to another location north of Meno.

To this marriage were born one son, Frank Kane of Meno; eight daughters, Amelia (Mrs. Albert Schmidt), Lillie (Mrs. Tob Schultz), Leona (Mrs. Cornelius Thomas), Meta (Mrs. Lincoln Koehn), Rena (Mrs. Nelson Wedel), Laura (Mrs. Walter Becker), Vera (Mrs. Alvin Ratzlaff), and Florence (Mrs. Albert Ratzlaff).

On Nov. 14, 1937, a little more than three years after the passing of his first wife, he entered into marriage with Mrs. Anna Unruh, with whom he lived for ten years until she passed away on Jan. 25, 1948. He spent his last years at the home of his oldest daughter, Mrs. Albert J. Schmidt, and at the Barnum Convalescent Home in Fairview, Okla. When he passed away Mr. Kane lacked only two days of being 88 years old.

Besides the passing of his first and second wife, two grandsons also preceded him in death.

He leaves to mourn his departure one son and eight daughters, all of whom are living in Major County, Okla., one daughter-in-law, eight sons-in-law, 19 grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted from the New Hopedale Mennonite Church on Tuesday, July 31, with Rev. Ben J. Nickel officiating, and Rev. Reuben Koehn and Rev. A. C. Siebert assisting.
