JOHN R. JOST

Our father, John R. Jost, was born Oct. 2, 1881, on a farm southwest of Hillsboro, Kansas, the son of Heinrich and Katherina Regehr Jost. It was in this same community that he attended Hope Valley School and grew to manhood. When he was 13 years old he accepted Christ as his personal savior, was baptized and received into the membership of the Gnadenau K.M.B. Church.

On Sept. 2, 1903, he was married to Helena Baerg and together they spent almost 59 years of happy companionship before mother passed away a little more than two months ago.

After moving to their present home in Hillsboro our parents joined the fellowship of the Hillsboro Mennonite Brethren Church in 1959 where father remained a faithful and interested member until the time of his death. While advancing age made it difficult to participate actively in the work of the church he was deeply interested in the ongoing of the Lord's work and during the past months particularly watched with interest the building program which could be seen from the home.

We shall always remember our father as one who was physically strong and a hard worker, but who was equally concerned that we should be strong spiritually. Except for a time in 1934 when he suffered a severe jaw infection our father enjoyed reasonable good health until the last year or so when it became difficult for him to walk. The death of our mother was a distinct shock to him and her absence increased the longing in his heart to go to be with the Lord. After spending several weeks in California visiting some of his children he became more seriously ill, had to be hospitalized, and on Tuesday evening, July 24, 1962, he passed away at Fresno, Calif., having reached the age of 80 years, nine months, and 22 days.

Those preceding him in death were his wife, Helena Baerg Jost; one daughter, Hulda; his parents; two brothers, Rev. Pete R. Jost of Hillsboro, Kansas and Henry R. Jost of Chicago, Ill.; one sister, Mrs. Anna Berg.

Surviving are nine children and their families, four brothers, Abe R. and Jake R. of Reedley, Calif., Mart R. of Dinuba, Calif, and Frank R. of Hillsboro; one sister, Mrs. A. L. Boese of Hillsboro; as well as 31 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. — The Family.
