At the age of one she came with her parents to the United States, settling in Kansas. She was reared in the Inman community where she received her education, which included one year of Bible school under the direction of Rev. J. H. Epp.

Here she was a member of the Bethel Sunday School Class and of the Christian Service Society, where she enjoyed the sewing meetings greatly. She was also a member of the Bethel Hospital Senior Auxiliary. She enjoyed the religious programs on the radio almost every day.
