• Funeral services for Herman Janzen, 117 West Second Street, were held Saturday morning at the Petersen Funeral Home with Rev. Paul Isaak officiating. Janzen, 78, died Thursday at Bethel Deaconess Hospital after a short illness. He was a member of the First Mennonite Church at Halstead, where he formerly lived on a farm. In 1917 he moved to California but returned to Newton in 1954 following the death of his wife, Luella. Among the close relatives surviving are three sisters, Mrs. John D. (Frieda) Wiens, Mrs. John H. (Louise) Ensz, and Mrs. Thomas (Ann) Hamilton, all of Newton. Two brothers and two sisters preceded him in death: Walter and Henry Janzen, Mrs. G. D. Schroeder and Mrs. Herman Brooks.
