— Funeral services for Cornelius K. Janzen, 74, Newton resident since 1943, were held Monday afternoon at the First Mennonite Church, Rev. Arnold Epp in charge. Mr. Janzen died Thursday afternoon at his home on Southeast Second street. A native of the Goessel community, he had been employed as night watchman at Bethel Deaconess Hospital. Surviving are his widow, the former Sarah Hiebert, seven sons, one daughter, 23 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Mrs. Janzen resides at the Bethel Home for Aged, having suffered a stroke of paralysis in 1957.

CORNELIUS K. JANZEN

Cornelius K. Janzen, son of John and Anna Koehn Janzen, was born March 29, 1885, in the Antioch district, rural Hillsboro, Kansas.

On May 31, 1903, he was baptized upon the confession of faith in Jesus Christ as his personal Savior from sin by Rev. Peter Balzer and received as a member of the Alexanderwohl Church near Goessel.

On April 6, 1909, he was united in marriage to Sarah Hiebert and settled on a farm in Marion County, Kansas, where later he united with the Tabor Mennonite Church. Seven sons and one daughter were born to this union.

In 1943 they left the farm and moved to Newton, Kansas. Here they joined the First Mennonite Church where he remained a faithful and loyal member till his death.

On Dec. 20, 1956, mother became ill and was taken to the Bethel Deaconess Hospital. She had nearly recovered and was preparing to return home when, on Jan. 13, 1957, she suffered a severe stroke. This required several months of hospitalization, following which she was transferred to the Bethel Home for Aged, where she is at the present time. Father was very faithful in seeing mother at least once a day and frequently more often. He always was a faithful and loving father and a generous host. He enjoyed having friends in for coffee or dinner.

He had several illnesses the last few years, but managed to be up and about his work most of the time.

Due to mother's illness our parent's [sic] celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in a quiet way on April 5 in the home for aged with only the members of the immediate family present.

He went to his heavenly reward on May 14, 1959, at his home, reaching the age of 74 years, one month, and 15 days.

He leaves to mourn his passing his beloved companion Sarah, and the following children: Abe and Elizabeth of Hutchinson; Curt and Katie of Newton; Elmer and Elma of Wichita; Frank Flaming and Lydia of Lehigh; Adolf and Alice of Enid, Okla.; Walter of the home; Edwin and Mary Jane of Elbing; Art and Louise of Newton; also 23 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and many friends.
