KATARINA JANTZEN

Katarina Jantzen of Rosthern, Sask. passed away Aug. 14. She was born May 26, 1894 to Jacob F. and Anna Berg in Osterwick, Ekaterinoslav, southern Russia. Her family was poor, but she attended elementary school and Saturday morning German school. After memorizing the catechism, she was baptized in 1914. Her father died in 1920. She and her mother immigrated to Hepburn, Sask. in 1923. She did housekeeping in 13 homes that year, mostly for a week or 2 when babies arrived. While working for C.N. Hieberts, she was saved. On Sept. 7, 1924 she and 48 others were baptized and joined Hepburn MB Church. During this time she became acquainted with the Peter H. Jantzen family. Peter's wife died, and he married Katarina July 25, 1943 in Brotherfield MB Church. She accepted his children in a wonderful way and took delight in hosting family gatherings for special occasions. In 1954 they moved to Waldheim, Sask., joining Waldheim MB Church. She enjoyed serving with the ladies' aid, and the sewing circle. In 1971 they moved to Dalmeny (Sask.) Home for the Aged. Peter died Apr. 26, 1973, but she continued courageously. She moved to Rosthern Home for the Aged in 1974 to be closer to her children, and to Rosthern Nursing Home in 1982. Later she desired to go to her heavenly home. Predeceased by her husband, daughter Elizabeth and 1 grandson, she is survived by her children Luella, Edward, Hanna Plett, Vernon, Eva and Miriam; 12 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great granchildren.
