Farm Accident Results In Death of Rev. Jantzen At Hillsboro

WAS RAKING HAY AT HOME OF HIS CHILDREN MR. AND MRS. ALVIN WIENS

The entire community at Hillsboro, as well as friends in other communities, were shocked to hear that Rev. J. D. Jantzen was killed in an accident at his former farm home shortly after noon on Friday, September 19.

Rev. Jantzen had been raking hay for his children, Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Wiens who now live on the family homestead, and was about ready to finish the field when his four year old grandson came out to call him home for dinner. After making a round with the grandson on the rake, Rev. Jantzen told him to go home and tell his mother that grandpa would come home as soon as the racking [sic] was finished.

Before arriving at home, however, the lad noticed the horses running across the field, which he reported to his mother. Mrs. Wiens immediately rushed out to the scene, only to find the lifeless body of her father, who had ben [sic] dragged a considerable distance by the horses. Evidently Rev. Jantzen had fallen from the rake, and was perhaps killed when his neck was broken. Being entangled in the rains [sic], he was dragged over the ground as the tongue and doubletree broke when the horses ran away.

Rev. Jantzen had been active as a minister in the Hillsboro Mennonite church for a number of years. He was about 70 years of age. He was a brother of H. P. Jantzen of Newton.

Funeral services were held at the Hillsboro church Tuesday morning, conducted by rev. Arnold Funk and Rev. J. M. Regier.
