Jantz, Susie Kaufman (1881-1951)
Mennonite Weekly Review obituary: 1951 Dec 6 p. 9
Birth date: 1881
text of obituary:
MRS. SUSIE JANTZ
Susie (Kaufman) Jantz, daughter of Andrew and Frances Waltner Kaufman, was born November 4, 1881, at Childstown, Turner county, South Dakota. She was baptized in the Salem Mennonite (North) church near Marion, S. D., by Rev. J. B. Baer in the year 1896, and remained a faithful member of the Mennonite church all her life.
She was joined in wedlock with John C. Jantz on October 10, 1901. In the spring of 1903 she moved with her husband and his entire family to the state of Washington where she endured the hardships of pioneering in the country south of Krupp (now Marlin) near Ruff. The Lord blessed this union with four children—one son and three daughters—all of whom are alive today. Later she settled with her family in Odessa, Wash., and then in 1948 moved to Portland, Oregon.
She always enjoyed the best of health and had never been confined to a hospital until stricken with a fatal illness in September of 1949. She endured her pain and suffering with much fortitude and continued to be a witness for Christ until the very end. The Lord called her home to Himself on Sunday, November 18, just as the sun was setting. She reached the age of 70 years and 14 days.
She leaves to mourn her departure besides her faithful husband, one son, Joe S. Jantz of Ruff, Wash.; three daughters, Jennie (Mrs. Art) Krehbiel, of Lind, Wash.; Josephine, Mrs. Phil Stucky of Seattle, Wash., and Esther, Mrs. Ferd Wiens, of Portland, Oregon; five grandchildren; five brothers and three sisters, John A. Kaufman of Acequia, Idaho, Peter A. Kaufman of Scappoose, Oregon, Charlie Kaufman of Parkston, S. D., Ben Kaufman of Yankton, S. D., Andrew Kaufman, Marie, Mrs. Peter Schrag, Emma, Mrs. Gerhard Schmidt, and Miss Ruth Kaufman, all of Marion, S. D.
Mother early in life gave her heart to the Lord and was always interested in the Lord’s work, taking a special interest in missions. Her home was always open to visiting missionaries and ministers of our own and other Christian faiths. As a result of this hospitality she was known and loved far and wide.
She committed her children to the Lord and taught them at all times to trust the Saviour. Besides being a faithful wife she was a real pal to her children as well as to all her neighbors and friends. Many recall with gratitude her openhanded generosity in times of trouble.
In her last weeks of illness she suffered terrible physical pain but in it all her bright faith kept shining through to inspire the many who came to see her. Her constant prayer was that none of her loved ones would be missing in heaven. Her earthly ministry has ended and now she dwells in the presence of the Father. Truly it may be said of her, "She has fought a good fight, she has finished her course, she has kept the faith.”
Funeral services were held on Friday, Nov. 23, at the Menno Mennonite church near Lind, Wash, with Rev. Willard Wiebe in charge, assisted by Rev. P. D. Unruh of Colfax. Hundreds of friends were present to pay their last respects.
