Jacob C. Jantz, son of Cornelius and Maria Jantz, was born near Marion Junction, S. Dak., Jan. 1, 1886. In the year of 1903 he came with his parents and brothers to the state of Washington, locating on a farm northwest of Ruff. In the year of 1905 he was baptized upon his confession of faith in the Lord Jesus Christ by the Elder Jacob R. Schrag and received as a member of the church at Menno. When the church in Ruff was organized in Dec. 29, 1910, he became one of its charter members. On January 19, 1908, he was united in marriage to Rose Miller. The Lord blessed this union with 5 children, 4 sons and 1 daughter. They lived on a farm north of Ruff until Dec. 1, 1932, when the family moved to the vicinity of Edwall where they lived since.
Jacob was a lover of the home. He had this distinct characteristic that when other boys of his age would be out and away much, he loved to be at home. His parents bear him this record that he was always obedient and dependable. These outstanding points of life he carried with him till later years. Neighbors around him testify of him a s a dependable man. He was a faithful member of the church. The Bible was a steady companion. John 6 was his favorite chapter and verse 35 was often quoted by him.
He became sick suddenly Sunday morning, December 16. At the hospital a double operation was preformed [sic] Tuesday morning. The operation appeared to have been successful, however, pneumonia set in, and Saturday morning. Dec. 22, he passed away quietly. He was conscious to the very end. Upon his death bed he told his family repeatedly, as he did thruout life, "How nice it is to have Jesus and to bear the assurance of being born again.". He attained an age of 48 years, 11 months, 21 days.
He leaves to mourn his untimely departure, his beloved wife, the 5 children, his aged parents, 4 brothers with their families and a host of relatives and friends. Four brothers preceded him in death. Though they mourn and will miss him yet his testimony leaves them the hope that he is at home with the Lord. Away from this cold earth, safe in the arms of Jesus. Gone but not forgotten, his memory will linger in the hearts of all.
Funeral services were conducted from the home of one of his brothers in Odessa, Monday, Dec. 24, at 10:45, and then from the Menno Mennonite church. His pastor, Rev. M. J. Galle, officiated.
