JACOB JANKE

Jacob Janke was born on Feb. 29, 1874, in Russia. His parents were Mr. and Mrs. Peter Janke.

In 1885, with his parents, he left Russia and came to America. They arrived at Lehigh, Kansas in November of 1885.

As a young man he realized his lost condition and trusted Christ as his personal Saviour. He was received into the membership of the Mennonite Brethren Church of Lehigh. His spiritual struggles were many, but he found victory in the Lord. In the latter years of his life he manifested a real faith in the sustaining grace of the Lord, and he called often upon Him. He was unable to attend church services because of physical handicaps.

On Feb. 27, 1908, he was married to Elizabeth Neufeld at Marion, Kansas. Until 1945he and his family resided in the Lehigh-Hillsboro, Kansas area. In 1945 he and his wife moved to Salem, Oregon, where they resided at the time of his death.

He had been an invalid for 28 years. About a year ago he suffered a stroke which affected his memory and speech. On the evening of May 16 he suffered another stroke which made it necessary for him to be hospitalized. On June 2 at 8:00 a. m. the Lord relieved him of his suffering and took him unto Himself. We rejoice in the knowledge that he is with the Lord.

He was preceded in death by an infant daughter and one son, Edward.

He leaves to mourn his wife Elizabeth; one daughter, Mrs. A. J. Nickel, and one son-in-law; one daughter-in-law; one grandson; three sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Penner and Mrs. Florentine Penner of Hillsboro, Kansas, Mrs. Anna Beuler of McPherspn, Kansas; two brothers, Abe of Lehigh, Kansas, and Carl of Garden City, Kansas. — The Family.
