Two Dead, Six Injured

Fatal Accidents in Indiana

Goshen, Ind. — Two traffic accidents in Elkhart and Noble counties last week left two persons dead and six injured, two critically.

Russell W. Yoder, 19-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Galen Yoder of rural Ligonier, was instantly killed June 29 when his car and one driven by Mrs. Wilma J. Hostetler of rural Ligonier collided at a county road intersection southwest of Topeka. Mrs. Hochstetler and daughters Nelaine, nine, and Nolita, eight, were all admitted to the Goshen Hospital. Nelaine was in critical condition with head injuries.

Russell was a 1970 graduate of Bethany Christian High School here and was a member of the Maple Grove Mennonite Church, Topeka, where the funeral was conducted on July 2 by Rev. Joe Swartz.

On June 30, two cars and a tractor were involved in a collision on US-20 west of Middlebury, causing the death of three-year-old Gary Humble, son of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Humble of rural Middlebury.

Officers reported that a tractor driven by a rural Goshen youth attempted a left turn across the highway. A South Bend motorist swerved to avoid the tractor and crashed head-on into the oncoming Humble auto, driven by Mrs. Humble. the tractor was also hit.

Mrs. Humble, 26, her son, Terry, age four, and the South Bend man were all brought to Goshen Hospital. Mrs. Humble suffered multiple fractures and was in critical condition. She was later transferred to the Elkhart hospital and was somewhat improved.

Funeral services for the little boy were held Saturday forenoon, July 3, at the Pleasant Oaks Mennonite Church near Middlebury with Rev. Floyd Quenzer officiating. Mrs. Humble is the former Katy Yoder, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ezra E. Yoder of Shipshewana.
