Services Held for Victim of 1949 Lake Tragedy
BODIES OF CHARLES E. HOSTETLER AND DAUGHTER-IN-LAW RECOVERED
Shipshewana. Ind. — Final services were held at the Shore Mennonite church near here Tuesday, July 11, for Charles E. Hostetler, 60, who with his three sons and a daughter-in-law perished in the waters of Lake Huron in Canada, October 1949. His body and that of Mrs. Paul Hostetler were found only recently on the shores of Manitoulin and Cockburn islands, respectively. The bodies of the three sons, Paul, Perry E. and Vernon Hostetler have not been found.
The family group was en route to Cockburn Island on a deer hunting expedition, traveling in an 18-foot boat, when it is believed they encountered heavy weather and high waves which upset the vessel.
Mr. Hostetler had spent most of his life in Elkhart and Lagrange counties and was widely known here. He served as trustee of Van Buren township, Lagrange county, from 1935 to 1943.
He is survived by his widow, Nora Miller Hostetler, three daughters, grandchildren and great grandchildren, and a number of brothers and sisters.
The funeral services here were in charge of Early Bontrager and Lee Miller, and burial was made in Bontrager cemetery.
