FATALLY INJURED IN CROSSING ACCIDENT

MENNO [sic MONROE] S. HOSTETLER OF NAPPANEE, IND., VICTIM OF CRASH ON DEC. 20

Nappanee, Ind. — Monroe S. Hostetler, 33, of 1065 East Walnut street, Nappanee, died at the Methodist hospital in Gary Saturday evening, Dec. 20, only a few minutes after his arrival there for treatment of injuries received when a passenger train on the Pennsylvania railroad struck a bus operated by the Gary Railway Bus Line, killing the driver instantly and fatally injuring Mr. Hostetler.

Mr. Hostetler was returning to Nappanee from Chicago with a truck load of freight. The truck developed trouble on U.S. 6, just north of Hobart, and he boarded the bus to return to Gary for repairs. At the Wisconsin street crossing over the railway the train struck the bus. The train was also derailed in the collision, but without injury to any of the passengers. Mr. Hostetler was thrown clear of the wreckage. He was picked up and rushed to the hospital but died about ten minutes after arrival. The body was returned to the Wright Funeral Home Saturday evening.

Mr. Hostetler was born April 14, 1914, at Topeka, Ind., a son of Samuel and Mattie Hershberger Hostetler.

He was united in marriage to Kathleen Hansen, at Palmeto, Fla., April 22, 1945, and they then came to Nappanee to make their home. He worked for George Grimm, Jr., as a truck driver, later purchasing a truck of his own.

Besides Mrs. Hostetler he is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Hostetler of route 4, Goshen; one stepson, Wesley Hansen, and two daughters, Patricia Ann and Jeanet Sue at home; seven brothers: Willis of Nappanee, John and Harvey of Goshen, Daniel of East Goshen, Samuel of West Goshen, Jacob of Mishawaka, and LeRoy, of Millersburg; three sisters, Miss Katie and Miss Mary Ellen Hostetler, of Goshen and Mrs. Willard Culp, of Tiskilwa, Illinois.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the First Mennonite church of Nappanee, Rev. Jacob J. Enz officiating. Burial was in the Union Center cemetery. — Nappanee Advance News.
