MARY ELLEN HOSTETLER

Mary Ellen (Hartzler) Hostetler, daughter of Jonathan T. and Martha (Hooley) Hartzler, was born in Salem Twp., Champaign County, Ohio on May 28, 1893. She died at Mercy Memorial Hospital, Urbana, Ohio, on Dec. 20, 1968, aged 75 years, six months, and 12 days.

On Jan. 2, 1916, she was married to Ira D. Hostetler. They spent most of their life (with the exception of three years in Maryland) in Champaign County, where they engaged in farming.

To this union were born four daughters and three sons, all of whom survive. They are Mrs. Lloyd (Berdena) Kanagy, Cable, Ohio; Mrs. Joe (Thelma) Garber, Edmonton, Alberta; Wendell (Whitey), Red Lake, Ontario; both of West Liberty, Ohio; June and Joyce, of the home. She is also survived by 24 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; two brothers and a sister, Emmett Hartzler, West Liberty, Mrs. Harold (Fern) Roberts, Morristown, Tenn., and Roy Hartzler, West Liberty. Her husband died suddenly on Aug. 21, 1955. Three brothers also preceded her in death.

In September 1956 she and the two younger daughters moved into their new home in West Liberty, where they have since resided. In 1961 she suffered a stroke, and had since been in failing health. In her later years she was semi-invalid, and passed the time reading, crochetting [sic] many beautiful articles, and visiting with her neighbors and many friends who called, by whom she will be greatly missed.

She accepted Christ as her Saviour in early youth and became a member of the Oak Grove Mennonite Church, where she remained a faithful member until death. She was especially active in the Dorcas Circle Sunday School class and the WMSA.

Let us arise and rejoice, Mother's ship has arrived on yonder shore of life's sea, and is safely anchored in the haven of rest.

Funeral services were held on Dec. 14 at the Oak Grove Mennonite Church, in charge of Pastor Eldon King. Burial was in the Oak Grove cemetery. (Written by Joe A. Yoder, step-brother.)
