One Killed When Car Skids on Icy Pavement

CRASH NEAR KALONA, IOWA TAKES LIFE OF JOHN L. HOSTETLER, 65

Kalona, Iowa. — John L. Hostetler, 65, of Kalona was instantly killed about 7:50 a. m. Monday, Nov. 16, when the car in which he was riding with his wife and daughter skidded on the icy pavement into the path of an oncoming car.

Mrs. Hostetler, who was driving, was taken to Mercy hospital in Iowa City, having sustained broken ribs. Sharol, the daughter, was treated and released.

Mr. Hostetler, a Kalona cabinet maker, leaves his wife, three daughters, Lefena and Sharol at home, Vileen of La Junta, Colo., and a son John, who with his family resides in Virginia.

JOHN L. HOSTETLER

John L. Hostetler, son of Levi D. and Susanna Hostetler, was born Dec. 30, 1894 in Fayette county, Ill. He passed away Nov. 16, 1959 at the age of 64 years, 10 months and 16 days. His death came almost instantly in an automobile accident about four miles north of Kalona, Iowa.

In his youth John accepted Christ as his Savior and became a member of the church in Howard County, Ind. Later he transferred his membership to the Conservative Mennonite church in the Kalona community.

On Jan. 6, 1924, he was united in marriage to Emma Brenneman, who passed away July 17, 1936. Five children were born to them: Alvin Ray, who died the same day he was born, Lafena of Kalona, an infant who was stillborn, Vileen of LaJunta, Colo., and John of Richmond, Va.

On Sept. 5, 1937, he was married to Katie Brenneman, a sister of his first wife. She survives him along with a daughter, Sharol Jean, who is at home. Also surviving are two grandsons, one brother Amos of Kalona, and a sister Mary, Mrs. Atlee Miller of Amboy, Ind. His parents, one sister, and a brother preceded him in death.

Funeral services were conducted at the Sunnyside Conservative Mennonite church on Nov. 19, in charge of Morris Swartzendruber and David L. Yoder. — The Family.
