Haying Accident Fatal To Young Farmer

FATHER OF FIVE THROWN HEAD FIRST FROM LOADED WAGON

Bellleville [sic Belleville], Pa. — A young Amish farmer of the Reedsville community and father of five children, Emanuel Hostetler, 34, was instantly killed in a fall from a load of hay at the farm of his brother-in-law, Joel Hostetler, on July 3.

The funeral services were held July 5 at the Sam H. Yoder home, and were attended by a large number of Amish residents from this and nearby communities. Bishop Sam S. Yoder was in charge.

The fatal accident occurred in the afternoon as the two men were hurrying to put away the last load of hay before a threatened rain arrived. Emanuel's son Joel, 8, was driving as the heavily loaded wagon rolled down a hill, and the horses began to run. The men tried to help stop the frightened team, which turned suddenly at a fence. Both men were thrown off headfirst, Emanuel's head striking a fencepost. His brother-in-law was not seriously hurt, and the horses and wagon stopped when the reins wrapped around a wheel.

The young farmer is survived by his wife Rachel, five children, his foster parents, Sam H. Yoders, two sisters and one brother.
