FORMER ROOSEVELT ASSISTANT CALLED AWAY IN DEATH
HARRY L. Hopkins, 55, WPA administrator from 1935 to 1938, who later as special assistant to the late President Roosevelt became one of the most powerful men in the nation, died in New York Tuesday, Jan. 29. Hopkins, who had shared many of the nation’s highest secrets, was so close to the late president that he lived for three and one-half years at the White House.
Born in Sioux City, Iowa, the son of a harness maker, Hopkins held the office of Federal Relief Administrator during the depression years of the 1930s and later became President Roosevelt’s closed confidant.
As assistant to the president, he attended several historic war conferences with Allied leaders and helped shape policies of war and peace.
Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at St. Bartholomew’s Protestant Episcopal church in New York.
