WAYNE HOOLEY

Wayne Hooley was born to Edwin and Mamie Egli Hooley on August 25, 1909 near Hubbard, Oregon. He was the oldest child in the family. With the blessing of a Christian home and the faithful ministry of Sunday school and church, Wayne accepted the Lord as his Saviour at the tender age of 11 and became a member of the Zion Mennonite Church, of which he was still a faithful member at the time of his death.

His deep concern for others was evident in the joy he found in services to the church and his readiness to help others. He served as Sunday school superintendent at the Portland Mission and the Zion Mennonite Church.

In 1926 his parental family moved to Portland. Two years later he went to work for the M. and M. Woodworking company, and worked there until the day of his death. He accepted joyfully the responsibilities of labor and his work was symbolic of his dedication.

On May 22, 1937 he was united in marriage to Hazel Fisher at her home by their minister, C. I. Kropf. To this happy union were born four sons: John of Gervais; Wayne of Oregon State College; David and Roger, who are still living at home. They also have one grandson, Kevin.

In 1945 the family moved from the Portland residence to a small from near West Linn, Oregon where they still reside.

Early in 1942 through a short illness Wayne and the family became conscious of the weakness of his heart. Friday evening, Dec. 7, after working a full day, he stopped on the way home from work to get a tire repaired and the Lord laid his hand upon Wayne and bade him “come home.” He reached the age of 53 years.

In addition to his wife Hazel, he is survived by his mother, Mamie Miller of Hubbard; three brothers, Ed Hooley of Hubbard, Hershal Hooley of Kalispell, Mont., and Virgil Hostetler of Hubbard. His father and his step-father, Amasa Hostetler preceded him in death.

As a father and a sincere friend, Wayne lived a life of dedication to God, to his family and his job. “Thou shalt be missed for thy seat will be empty.” I Samuel 20:18.

The memorial service was held at the Zion Mennonite Church on Dec. 11 with Pastor John Lederach and Clarence Kropf officiating. Music was provided by the Zion Octet with a solo by Bud Yoder. Interment was in the Zion cemetery.
