PETER HOFSTETTER

Peter Hofstetter was born in Langnau, Switzerland, in the Canton of Bern on April 30, 1876. He left this earthly life to be with the Lord whom he loved and served on Jan. 26, 1956, after suffering a severe stroke several weeks earlier.

Surviving are his wife, Sarah Hofstetter of Salem, Oregon, and his two brothers, Simon of Apple Creek, Ohio and John of Dalton, Ohio, besides a number of relatives and many friends.

Mr. Hofstetter came to America from Switzerland in April 1881 and resided in the Dalton, Ohio community with his parents until 1909, when he came to Oregon.

He was united in holy marriage to Sarah Gerber on Feb. 12, 1913. A baby daughter, Lila Anna, was born to them but died in infancy. The Hofstetters made their home 1951 when they took up residence in the Methodist Home.

Mr. Hofstetter was baptized upon confession of faith in the Sonnenberg church, Dalton, Ohio in 1895. He became a member of the Emmanuel Mennonite church at Pratum in 1910 and was a deacon and treasures [sic] of that church for a number of years. The sincerity of his Christian testimony is well established through the respect and responsibility he gained both in the church and the community.

Memorial services were conducted at Rigdons Chapel in Salem and he was laid to rest in the Pratum cemetery. The pastor, Rev. Frank S. Harder, and Rev. J. M. Franz officiated. A quartet from the church sang "The Lily of the Valley" and Rev. Burkholder from Dallas sang a solo, "Some Golden Daybreak."
