Amish Father, Two Daughters Killed in Crossing Accident

Whitehall, Wis. — Triple funeral services were conducted at a home in the Amish settlement here Feb. 9 for Jacob N. Hochstetler and two little daughters, Phoebe and Sarah, who lost their lives in a grade crossing accident.

Relatives and friends from Iowa, Ohio and other Wisconsin settlements came for the services. A horse-drawn wagon carrying the three caskets led the funeral procession to the small cemetery on a foggy, wintry day.

The father and daughters were en route to town to shop and deliver eggs on Feb. 5 when their horse-drawn buggy was struck by Green Bay and Western Railroad freight train. It is thought the horse refused to stop and pulled the buggy onto the tracks.

Hochstetler and the older daughter were instantly killed and the younger child died shortly after admittance to the hospital here.
