text of obituary:
Shipshewana, Ind. — Marlin Hochstetler, 13, of rural Shipshewana died Nov. 7 in Lagrange County Hospital from burns suffered in a flash fire at his home the day before. Other members of the family narrowly escaped with their lives.
The flash fire occurred when the boy's father, Lewis Hochstetler, was spreading adhesive in preparation for laying a tile floor in the entranceway of his new home. When fumes from the adhesive came in contact with a nearby kerosene lamp, the blaze resulted.
Mr. and Mrs. Hochstetler rushed up to the second floor to rescue their sleeping children, three girls and four boys ages 13 to two. They led the children downstairs but Marlin, confused and panic-stricken, took a wrong turn into the burning entranceway. he suffered third degree burns over his entire body.
Mr. Hochstetler was able to remove Marlin and put out the fire. However, the parents and twin two-year-old brothers were all treated for burns and smoke inhalation.
