text of obituary:

John Hirschler.

John Hirschler, son of Christian and Magdalene Schmitt Hirschler, was born at the parental home near Wissembourg, Alsace, France, on September 16, 1851. At the age of 14 years, he accepted Christ as his personal Saviour, and through the rite of baptism united with the Mennonite Church of that place, in later years transferring his membership to the Halstead, Kansas, Mennonite Church.

After spending thirty years of his life in the home of his birth, he came to Rochester, N. Y., in the spring of 1882 and two years later he came to Kansas, locating south of Halstead; where he had since resided.

On October 17, 186, he united in the bonds of holy matrimony with Magdalene Weber, his faithful life companion, who shared with him the joys and sorrows of thirty-four happy years. To this union were born two children, Edgar L. and Martha M., who for a number of years were privileged to share the blessings of the parental home with three other homeless children, whom the parents loved as fondly as their own.

On December 30, 1920, his life companion was called to her eternal reward. Though home lost its greatest charm, the family home was maintained until his death severed the last ties; however, to those who dwelt therein, its blessings will ever be held in grateful remembrance.

Blessed with a strong constitution, a great desire and love for work and with the firm convection that all things work together for good to them that love God, he was ever active until a stroke of paralysis and other complications of advanced age, compelled him to cease his activities. For almost two years his health and strength were failing and his oft-expressed wish "to go home" was granted when on October 20, at 12:00 P.M., he quietly and peacefully fell asleep in the Lord, attaining the age of 80 years, 1 month and 4 days.

Numerous friends and relatives, his son and daughter, a daughter-in-law and three grandchildren remain to treasure his memory.

Funeral services were held from the Halstead Mennonite church, Friday afternoon, Oct. 23, at 2:30 o'clock with Rev. H. T. Unruh officiating.
