JACOB FREDERICK HINKLE

Jacob Frederick Hinkle, son of George C. and Catherine Lori Hinkle, was born Feb. 27, 1883 at La Crosse, Kan. His parents had emigrated from Russia, arriving at Peabody, Kan. on July 4, 1875. After childhood, he lived in the Harper, Kan. area where he farmed.

On May 7, 1907 he married Susan Brubaker at Harper. She was taken in death on July 19, 1957 after a union of 50 years.

He was a farmer in Kansas until 1936 when he moved to Port Trevorton, Pa. He continued farming until he retired in about 1962.

He was an active member of the Pleasant Valley Mennonite Church at Harper while living in Kansas. He loved to sing and enjoyed the mid-week prayer meetings. He also spent some of his younger days at Hesston, Kan. doing farm work. He helped build the first building, Green Gables, at Hesston College.

He transferred his membership to the Susquehanna Mennonite Church at Port Trevorton, Pa., and was an active member until the past two years, when he was not able to attend services regularly due to infirmities.

On April 6 he developed pneumonia, and he died on April 27, 1974, at the age of 91 at the Geisinger medical Center, Danville, Pa.

He loved life and was a blessing to all those around him. He loved to fellowship with his fellow-workers in Christ and enjoyed the youth group as they visited him and sang. His concern was for others, as was the text used at his funeral, Luke 23:28, "Weep not for me, but weep for yourselves, and for your children."

He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Edwin (Helen) Arnold of Route 2, Port Trevorton, with whom he lived, Mrs. Stanley (Imogene) Eyer of Vero Beach, Fla.; three sons, Joseph and Elmer of Route 2, Port Trevorton, and Milford of Freebury; a sister, Mrs. Hannah DeWees of Livingston, Calif.; a brother, Jonas, of Denver, Colo.; seven grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. A son, Reuben, and a daughter, Sara, preceded him in death.

Services were held May 1, 1974 at 2 p.m. at Susquehanna Mennonite Church. Bishop Donald E. Lauver officiated, assisted by Rev. Goodell E. Williams.
