PHILIP HILTY

Death has claimed another of the older members of the Crown Hill church, Rittman, Ohio. Philip Hilty died on Aug. 24 after being bedfast about a week. He was 85 years old and had been living with his daughter; Della, in their home near the Rittman Old People’s Home, up until the last month or so, doing his own work as usual.

He is survived by four sons, Noah, minister at Crown Hill, Elmer, deacon at Crown Hill, Daniel, minister at Salem, Wesley of Dayton, Ohio; three daughters, Fannie, wife of Ralph Eberly, Lavina, wife of Stanford Mumaw, and Della of the home; besides grandchildren, a sister, Mrs. Miriam Brenneman, and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Monday afternoon with services at the home by Isaac Zuercher and E. F. Hartzler, and at the Crown Hill church by Wm. Detweiler. Burial was in the cemetery nearby. His wife, Mary, and son Ira had preceded him in death.

Bro. Hilty’s tenor voice will be heard no more and his accustomed seat will be empty but his memory will live on in the hearts of the people at Crown Hill.

PHILIP HILTY

Philip, the eleventh child of Peter and Mary Ann Steiner Hilty, was born in Milton township, Wayne county, Ohio on Jan. 30, 1865.

He grew to manhood on the old homestead and in his chosen vocation as a farmer continued to till part of that farm until his retirement in 1934. His success in the field of agriculture led many to seek his counsel and advice.

His disposition was marked with congeniality, his industry with diligence, his management with integrity, and his Christian devotion with stability and constancy.

In addition to his busy life as a farmer, he gave much time and help to interests of the church. For many years he served as trustee of the Crown Hill Mennonite church of which he was a charter member. Ho also served as trustee of the Mennonite Old People’s Home, giving considerable time to the oversight and direction of its affairs.

When a young man he became interested in vocal music. He held singing classes, served as church chorister, and often led the singing at special occasions such as weddings and funerals.

On Jan. 7, 1892, he was united in marriage to Mary B. Steiner. For over fifty years they shared the joys and sorrows of life together, until her death on April 24, 1942. God was pleased to bless this union with five sons and three daughters. His companion, one son Ira, and four grandchildren preceded him in death.

He leaves to survive him one sister, Mrs. Miriam Brenneman of Orrville, Ohio; four sons, Noah of Marshallville, Ohio, minister in the Crown Hill Mennonite church, Wesley of Dayton, Ohio, Daniel of Sterling, Ohio, minister in the Salem Mennonite church at Wooster, Ohio, and Elmer of Rittman, Ohio, deacon in the Crown Hill church; three daughters, Della at home, Fannie, Mrs. Ralph Eberly of Orrville, and Lavina, wife of Stanford Mumaw, Dalton, Ohio, minister in the Martins Mennonite church.

Eighteen grandchildren and other relatives also survive him.

Although his health began to fail last winter, he was bedfast for only eight days and peacefully departed this life at his home near the old people’s home, Rittman, Ohio on Aug. 24, 1951, aged 86 years, six months and 24 days.

Funeral services were conducted at the home and at Crown Hill Mennonite church by E. F Hartzler, Isaac Zuercher and Wm. G. Detweiler. Burial was made in the adjoining cemetery.
