Baby Dies as Car Hits Buggy Carrying Family

Berne, Ind. — A traffic accident north of Berne the day before Thanksgiving brought injury and sadness to an Amish family of Monroe Township.

A horse-drawn buggy carrying the Elmer A. Hilty family was struck from the rear by an auto, fatally injuring the four-month-old daughter, Margaret, and injuring the five other members of the family.

All six members of the family were thrown out by the impact, and the buggy was demolished. Mrs. Hilty, who was holding the baby, suffered severe head lacerations. Mr. Hilty suffered bruises, and the other three children escaped with minor injuries.

The baby apparently landed on the pavement on her head. She died en route to the hospital.

Funeral services were held Friday at the Hilty home.
