Killed in British Columbia Crash

Hillsboro, Kan. — One of the largest funerals held here within recent years took place Tuesday forenoon in the Hillsboro Mennonite Brethren Church as services were held for Dr. Lando N. Hiebert, 48, chairman of the Tabor College Bible Department who was fatally injured in an auto accident near Abbotsford, British Columbia on July 5.

The large church seating more than 1,000 persons was filled to near capacity for the services, which were in charge of Rev. Marvin Hein, the pastor. Assisting him were Rev. Clarence Hiebert, assistant pastor, and Rev. Herman Lenzmann, vice-chairman of the M. B. Mission Board.

Dr. Hiebert, who was active in many areas of work in the Mennonite Brethren Conference, was en route from the annual Canadian M. B. Conference at the time of the early morning head-on collision. He died about 20 minutes later, before he could be taken to a hospital. His ten-year-old daughter, Ruth, escaped with minor injuries but another passenger, Bill Wiebe, was more seriously hurt. Other members of the Hiebert family were not along when the crash occurred.

One year go, three M. B. church leaders from Canada en route to the Canadian Conference at Coaldale, Alberta were killed in a highway accident at Bonnets Ferry, Idaho.

Dr. Hiebert had recently been appointed administrative assistant at Tabor College for the coming year. He also served his denomination as chairman of the Mission Board, chairman of the six-state Southern District Conference, and a member of the district pulpit committee.

A native of Mountain Lake, Minn., he was a graduate of Tabor College and Willamette University in Oregon. He studied at Dallas Theological Seminary, the University of Minnesota, and at Central Baptist Theological Seminary in Kansas City, where he earned both the master’s and doctor’s degrees in theology. He was completing work toward a graduate degree in education at Willamette University this summer.

Before joining the Tabor faculty in 1949, Dr. Hiebert was an instructor and librarian at Grace Bible Institute, Omaha, for four years.

Survivors include his wife, the former Katherine Nickel; a son Rolyn, 18; two daughters, Marcia, 16, and Ruth, 10; his mother, Mrs. N. N. Hiebert of Hillsboro; four brothers, Clyde of Congers, N. Y., Sam of Fort Bragg, N. C., Rev. Waldo Hiebert of Reedley, Calif., and Alvin of Los Angeles; and three sisters, Mrs. Harry Beier of Sanger, Calif., Mrs. Henry Schultz of Altadena, Calif., and Mrs. Ben Friesen of Dallas, Oregon.
