Maria Schmidt Hiebert, ward geb. den 14. Jan. 1885 nahe Canton, McPherson County, Kansas und erhielt ihre Schulbildung in der Nord-Blumenfeld Schule. Am 31. Mai 1903 ward sie von Aelt. Peter Balzer getauft und aufgenommen in die Alexanderwohl Gemeinde wo sie Glied blieb. Am 9. Nov. 1905 heiratete sie Heinrich G. Hiebert. Sieben Kinder wurden ihnen geschenkt und betrauern mit dem Gatten ihr plötzliches Scheiden. Viele Segnungen, aber auch Trübsale waren der Familie beschert — “Durch Kreuz zur Krone”. Die Heimgerufene litt vom 17ten Jahr ihres Lebens an Asthma. Am 21. Sept. ward sie sehr krank nach dem Bethesda Hospital gebracht, konnte aber nach einer Woche wieder heim kommen. Am 8. Okt. ward sie schon wieder nach dem Hospital gebracht und konnte nach 2 Wochen wieder heim kommen; doch am 10. Nov. 1945 ward sie schon wieder ins Hospital gebracht und am 22. Nov. darauf nahm der Herr sie morgens zu sich. Ihre Alter war 60 J. 10 M. und 8 Tage. Die Familie weiß, daß der liebe Gott keine Fehler macht und schaut vortwärts auf ein freudiges Wiedersehen. Die letzten Tage waren ihr noch manche Bibelverse ein Trost die der treue Gatte vorlas; besonders tröstete der Vers: “Siehe, ich bin bei euch alle Tage bis an der Welt Ende”. Fast ihre letzten Worte waren: “Ich halte mich an Jesu.” Sie hinterläßt ihren Gatten und die Kinder: Menno u. Familie; Paul u. Familie; Otto u. Levi und Familien; Lena, Frau Reuben Hiebert u. Familie; Elizabeth, Frau Amandus Frey u. Familie; Tina, Frau Frank Koehn u. Familie und 14 Enkel. “Selig sind die Toten, die im Herrn sterben . . .”

— Funeral services for Mrs. H. G. Hiebert of rural Hillsboro, were held at the Alexanderwohl church last Sunday afternoon with Rev. P. A. Wedel and Rec. C. C. Wedel in charge. Mrs. Hiebert was one of the long-time residents of the Alexanderwohl community, and passed away after lingering illness.

MRS. MARIA SCHMIDT HIEBERT

Mrs. Maria Schmidt Hiebert was born on January 14, 1885, on the farm of her parents, Peter E. and Helena Duerksen Schmidt, near Canton, Kansas, in McPherson county. She received her public school training in the North Blumenfield district school.

May 31, 1903, she was baptized upon confession of faith in her Redeemer, by Elder Peter Balzer and became a member of the Alexanderwohl church, of which she remained a faithful member till her death.

She was united in marriage to Henry G. Hiebert November 9, 1905. To this union, seven children were born, four sons and three daughters.

For 40 years and 13 days she was able to share life’s joys and sorrow with her husband. The Lord blessed them bountifully but they also experienced sorrow.

Since the age of 17 years the departed suffered from asthma, bearing her cross cheerfully, leaving it all in the hands of the Lord. On September 21, she became seriously ill and was taken to the Bethesda hospital where she remained for a week, after which she seemed much improved. On October 8, her condition again seemed critical and she was taken to the hospital, where she was a patient for two weeks, then returned home improved. On November 10, she had to re-enter the hospital where the best of medical care was given to save her life, however, on Thanksgiving morning she passed away to her Heavenly Home at 8:00 A. M.

She reached the age of 60 years 10 months and eight days. As family we feel that she has left us too soon, but are fully convinced that she is with her Lord and Saviour to whom she often prayed in the last days of her life. Her husband recited Bible verses to her which gave her much comfort, especially such verses as “I am with you alway even to the end of the world.” She then replied, “I will hold fast to Jesus.”

The cause of her death was pneumonia and a weak heart. Even though our hearts are bleeding, we hope to meet her again in the great Beyond.

She leaves to mourn her sudden departure, her deeply bereaved husband, Henry G. Hiebert and family; Paul Hiebert and family; Otto Hiebert and family; Levi Hiebert and family; Lena, Mrs. Reuben Hiebert and family; Elizabeth, Mrs. Amadaus [sic Amadeus] Frey and family; and Tena, Mrs. Frank Koehn and family; 14 grandchildren of whom three preceded her in death.

The following verses give us much comfort:

Saviour lead me lest I stray
Gently lead me all the way
I am safe when by Thy side
I would in Thy love abide.
Thou the refuge of my soul
When life’s stormy billows roll
I am safe when Thou art nigh
On Thy mercy I rely.
Saviour lead me till at last
When the storms of life are past
I shall reach the land of day
Where all tears are wiped away.
