16-Year-Old Florida Youth Killed When Ditch Caves In
Atmore, Ala. — A ditch cave-in at a farm near here on Nov. 27 claimed the life of David Ross Hiebert, 16-year-old son of Melvin and Kathryn (Smith) Hiebert.
The young man, his father and several helpers were laying tile on the Hiebert farm, and near the close of the day a portion of the 11-foot-deep ditch caved in on the youth, causing death by suffocation.
The largely attended funeral services were held Nov. 30 at the Walnut Hill, Fla. Mennonite Church, of which he was a member. The Church of God in Christ, Mennonite settlement near here is located in northern Florida.
Surviving the young man besides his parents are two younger brothers and the grandparents, Min. and Mrs. P. G. Hiebert of Atmore and Min. and Mrs. Dan Smith of Fairview, Okla.
