Widely-Known Minister Dies At Lititz, Pa.

REV. J. W. HESS HAD TRAVELED EXTENSIVELY IN EVANGELISTIC WORK

Lancaster, Pa. — Funeral services for Rev. John W. Hess, 73, well-known Mennonite minister and evangelist, were held April 8 at the Ephrata Mennonite Church. He died April 5 at his home in Kissel Hill near Lititz after an 11-month illness.

Rev. Hess was ordained to the ministry at Kansas City, Mo. in 1908, and during a half century in the ministry he had visited most of the 48 states in evangelistic work. In the early years of his ministry he engaged in rural mission work in Missouri and Iowa.

In addition to his church work, Rev. Hess was associated with the shoe business as a salesman until his retirement from that work in 1954. He and Mrs. Hess lived at Akron until about a year ago.

Survivors include his wife, the former Lizzie Burkholder; four daughters and three sons; 19 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
