Retired Businessman Dies in Oregon Crash

Hubbard, Ore. — Funeral services were held at the Zion Mennonite Church here March 21 for Jacob J. Hershberger, 77, retired Woodburn business man who was instantly killed in a highway crash.

Mr. Hershberger was traveling alone on the Lebanon-Corvallis highway south of Albany when his car collided with a mobile home.

A native of Charm, Ohio, Mr. Hershberger came to Oregon in 1909. He lived at Hubbard before moving to Woodburn in 1935. He operated an auto agency at the latter place for many years.

Since the death of his wife, Malinda, last October he had been living part time at the Mennonite Home south of Albany.

Jacob J. Hershberger was born to Jonas and Elizabeth (Schlabach) Hershberger on Oct. 29, 1885 at Charm, Okla. He was the oldest child in the family.

On March 12, 1907 he was united in marriage to Malinda Kramer, and in 1914 the family moved west to Oregon, taking up residence in Hubbard. There he established an auto repair shop for five years. At this time he moved to the homestead of his father-in-law and in 1925 again returned to the auto business in Hubbard. Six years later, in 1931, he moved the business to Woodburn. Selling and repairing automobiles was something that he enjoyed very much and he his retirement years.

Early in their married life Mr. and Mrs. Hershberger, upon confession of faith and water baptism, joined the Christian community at the Zion Mennonite Church. Just five months ago Mrs. Hershberger was quietly laid to rest in the Zion cemetery. Since the death of his wife, he resided at the Albany Mennonite Home.

On March 15 he was driving his car south to Lebanon to visit his daughter. As He came to an intersection, through unforeseen and unknowable events, he collided with a truck pulling a large trailer house, and through this the Lord laid his hand on him and bade him “come home..” He reached the age of 77 years, four months and 17 days.

He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Maybe McGrew of Lebanon, Ore. and Mrs. Amy Higgenbotham, of Milwaukie, Ore.; one son, John of Woodburn, Ore.; seven grandsons and two great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Barbara Glick; and two brothers, John Hershbrger of Beach, Ohio and Levi Hershberger of Millersburg, Ohio.

The memorial service was held at Zion Mennonite Church on March 21, with Pastor John Lederach and Clarence Kropf officiating. Interment was in the Zion Cemetery in the Hershberger family plot.
