Two Elkhart County, Ind. Young Men Die In Traffic Accidents

Goshen, Ind. — Two Mennonite young men became Elkhart County's 14th and 15th traffic victims of the year in separate accidents about a week apart.

Winford Gene Hershberger, 26, of Route 2, Goshen was instantly killed the morning of July 17 when he rode his motor scooter into the side of a car at an Elkhart street intersection. He was en route to work at an Elkhart electronics plant.

A graduate of Bethany Christian High School and Goshen College, he was a trained nurse. He and his wife, the former Rosa Stauffer, planned to enter mission work in Costa Rica. They have two small children. His parents are Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Hershberg [sic Hershberger] of Nappanee.

Funeral services were held Tuesday at the East Goshen Mennonite Church, where he was an active member. His death was the third in this congregation, all in traffic accidents, in the past seven weeks.

Car Crashed Into Tree

Funeral services were held at the First Mennonite Church of Middlebury on July 14 for George E. Marner, 17, who was fatally hurt in a one-car crash July 11.

The young man, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Marner of Route 2, Shipshewana, was traveling alone on Indiana 120 north of Middlebury when his light car went out of control for unknown reasons, left the highway and hit two trees. He died an hour later in Elkhart General Hospital.

The youth would have been a senior at Bethany Christian High School this fall. Besides his parents he leaves four brothers and one sister.
