JOHN D. HERSHBERGER

John Hershberger, executive director of the Denver Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, died March 27, 1993, at his Arvada, Colo., home. He was an avid runner and had just returned from his morning jog. He was 60.

He was born Oct. 23, 1933, in Alberta, the son of Owen and Clara Brenneman Hershberger. He moved with his family to Hesston, Kan., in 1941. He lived in Hesston most of the years until 1955 when he moved to Colorado, living there much of the time until his death.

On May 2, 1953, John married Grace Bontrager at Yoder, Kan. Also surviving are their four children and spouses: Geneva and Pat Cameron, Wichita, Kan., Kay and Greg Stalter, Eagle River, Wis., Charlotte and John Koenig, Davenport, Iowa, Jeff and Juanita Hershberger, Goshen, Ind., and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Glenn and Kenneth. His remaining siblings are Pearl Rodgers of Hesston, Howard of Harper, Kan., and James of Orrville, Ohio.

John was executive director of Spaulding since 1980 and held many offices in professional and charitable organizations. He was instrumental in establishing the National Stroke Association, served on board positions with the Colorado Neurological Institute, Voluntary Hospitals of America-Mountain States and the Colorado Head Injuries Foundation. He was a member of the governing council of the American Association Section for Rehabilitation. He served as vice chairman of the college’s presidential search committee.

John was a member of and active at First Mennonite Church in Denver. Memorial services were held at First Mennonite, with pastors Jerry Weaver and Ann Showalter officiating.
