Amish Bishop, Youth Drown in Accident On Ohio River

Sugarcreek, Ohio. — An accident on the Mohican River near Loudonville on Jan. 28 claimed the lives of Milan J. Yoder, 40, a bishop in the Amish church and father of seven children, and Jacob Hershberger of Apple Creek, son of the Eli J. Hershbergers.

These two with Danny Hershberger and Joe Gingerich, all employees of Coblentz Bros., were engaged in logging operations along the Mohican and were trying to cross the river by boat when it overturned.

Bishop Yoder leaves his wife, the former Ruth Miller, five daughters and two sons, all of the home on Route 2, Apple Creek. Funeral services were held at the residence on Feb. 1.

Services for Amish Father of Four Held In Wayne County

Sugarcreek, Ohio. — Amish funeral services for Jacob E. Hershberger, 28, one of two Wayne County men who drowned in the Mohican River on Jan. 28, were held at the residence near Apple Creek on Feb. 7.

Hershberger leaves his wife and four young children of the home; his parents, the Eli Hershbergers; two brothers and four sisters.

Also drowned in the tragedy was Bishop Milan J. Yoder, 40, of rural Apple Creek, father of seven children.

The two men along with two survivors, Danny Hershberger and Joe Gingerich, were trying to cross the river in a boat when it overturned. All were engaged in logging operations for Coblenz Bros. near Loudonville. The body of Jacob Hershberger had hot been recovered at the time of his funeral.
