M. C. HERSCHBERGER
M. C. Herschberger, son of Christian and Susan Herschberger, was born in Howard county, Indiana, October 17, 1860, where he lived until he moved to McPherson, Kansas where he met and married Mary Borntrager in 1883.
To this union were born three sons and three daughters. Two sons, Chris and Clarence, preceded him in death. Those surviving him are his wife Mary; one son, Carl of Ashland, Mabel Eccles and Alta Martens of Wichita and Grace Beyler of Harper; ten granddaughters, five grandsons, and 12 great-grandchildren. His five brothers and three sisters preceded him in death, leaving him the last of his family.
He lived in Oklahoma for ten years then came to Harper, Kansas, where he has lived the past 35 years. He was a faithful member of the Methodist church and for many years assisted in the coir with his splendid tenor voice.
For many years he was employed with the Hunter Milling company at Okeene, Okla., Oxford and Milan. For ten years he was custodian at the Presbyterian church and during the past few years he had gone daily to the real estate office of his son-in-law, Alfred Beyler, where he enjoyed visiting with people and holding the distinction of being the oldest office boy in town. It was while he was taking a short walk form the office Thursday afternoon that he stopped to visit and suffered a cerebral hemorrhage. He was taken to the Joslin hospital but did not regain consciousness. He passed away at 5:430 Friday, November 21, age 87 years one month and four days.
He had been blessed with unusually fine health, and enjoyed his family, church, and friends. He was always willing and anxious to be of assistance wherever he could. He and his wife both observed their birthdays during the past two months, also their 64th wedding anniversary, and enjoyed the visits of relatives from four states.
Funeral services were conducted by Rev. G. E. Heitmeyer, assisted by Rev. H. B. Mayo, at the Methodist church of Harper on Sunday afternoon, November 23, with interment at the Harper cemetery.
