JOHN GROFF HERR

John Groff Herr, 92, of Landis Homes Retirement Community, Lititz, Pa., died March 3, 2004, of congestive heart failure. He was born Nov. 2, 1911, to Jacob R. and Mary B. (Groff) Herr in Lancaster.

He married Ellen Hostetter Bucher on Jan. 27, 1931. They began wintering in Naples, Fla., in 1967 and lived there 1980-1998. In 1998 they moved to Landis Homes Retirement Community.

He was a member of East Chestnut Mennonite Church of Lancaster. He was a retired builder and farmer. An avid traveler, he visited New Zealand, Central America, Alaska, Newfoundland, Europe and South Africa. They toured more than 22 countries.

He served as a volunteer at North Naples Community Hospital and Landis Homes Retirement Community. They contributed to the many needs in Immokalee, Fla. He will be lovingly remembered for his keen sense of humor and kind ability to share with all he met.

Survivors include his wife of 73 years, Ellen; a son, John Bucher Herr and his wife, Martha, of Rawlinsville; a daughter, Barbara Ann Herr Ranck and her husband, John, of Naples, Fla.; 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Ellen Herr Brubaker; and three brothers, Jacob G., Benjamin G. and David G. Herr.

A memorial service was held in the West Bethany Chapel at Landis Homes Retirement Community. A private family burial was held at Millersville Mennonite Cemetery.
