Cheyenne Chief, Lay Minister Dies

Newton, Kan. (GGNS) — John Heap of Birds, Indian American church leader and a chief of the Cheyenne Indians, died Oct. 1 in the University Hospital in Oklahoma City at the age 72.

John Heap of Birds joined the Mennonite Church on August 25, 1907, and was baptized by the late Rev. J. B. Ediger, early missionary to the Indian Americans. On Nov. 22, 1936, he transferred his membership to the Deer Creek Mennonite Church, five miles south of Thomas, Okla. Here he served as a lay minister for some years.

Funeral services were held in the Brethren in Christ Church at Thomas. Indians from the entire area came together for the service. Included were also many friends from the community. In charge of the service was Rev. Lawrence Hart, pastor of the Koinonia Mennonite Church, Clinton, Okla., assisted by Rev. Henry L. Landis, pastor of the local Brethren in Christ Church. Andrew R. Shelly, executive secretary of the General Conference Board of Missions, delivered the funeral sermon.
