Widely Known Doctor Taken in Death

DR. R. S. HAURY MEMBER OF BETHEL HOSPITAL STAFF SINCE 1908

Dr. Richard S. Haury, 78, one of Newton’s widely known physicians and surgeons and a member of the Bethel Deaconess Hospital Staff since 1908, died at 8:23 a.m., Friday, March 16. He suffered a hip fracture on Feb. 16 and was a patient at the hospital since that time.

He was born Sept. 27, 1872, at Trenton, Ill., the son of Daniel and Anna Haury, coming to Halstead, Kansas, with his parents in 1875. Dr. Haury received his medical degree from Northwestern University in 1902. On June 10, 1903, he was married to Linda A. Krehbiel of Newton, who now survives him, together with their three daughters, Mrs. Walter B. (Florence) Enns, Mrs. Leo (Mildred) Brandt, both of Newton, and Mrs. Harold (Anna Marie) Regier, Buhler.

In 1907 he took his family to Berlin, Germany where he engaged in advanced studies at the Berlin University. The following year he joined the medical staff of the Bethel Deaconess Hospital and later the newly organized Bethel Clinic, where he continued his medical practice until his retirement in 1943.

Besides being an able family doctor and surgeon, he was also a counsellor and friend to many patients who came to him for help. Throughout the 40 years of his membership in the Bethel College church he took active part in its work and served in various official positions.

Funeral services were held at the First Mennonite church Monday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Lester Hostetler of the Bethel College church, and Dr. J. H. Langenwalter, a former president of Bethel College. The services were largely attended, friends from far and near having come to pay their last respects. Burial was in Greenwood cemetery.
