Edwin J. Haury

Edwin J. Haury was born March 4, 1874 near Trenton, Illinois. In March 1875 he came to Kansas with his parents and entered the community north of Halstead where he has lived and labored ever since.

The public school o his home community, the Halstead Mennonite Seminary and the Bethel College contributed to his educational development and interests. He built well upon the foundation laid by his home and these schools by carefully selected reading and by quiet, thoughtful observation and study of human affairs. He rewarded the efforts of the home by the services of a faithful son and brother; those of the local school, by serving as a member o the board for many years; and those of Bethel College, by giving whole-hearted support through interest, time and body.

On October 7, 1888, the deceased united with the First Mennonite church of Halstead on confession of faith through baptism. He remained a faithful and helpful member of this fellowship for nearly thirty-eight years. At seventeen years o age he became a Sunday School teacher. There was probably no time since then that he was not rendering valuable service in some position or office of the Sunday School, Christian Endeavor or Church. He served many years as superintendent of the Sunday School and as president of the Christian Endeavor and during recent years has been entrusted with the opportunities and responsibilities of deacon and chairman of the church.

He was a home loving man. On October 21, 1908 he was married to Miss Susan I. Schmidt who was taken in death on June 9, 1923. Three children, Orville, Elizabeth and Hilda had blessed this union. For more than two years the father nobly and heroically attempted to meet the responsibilities of the double parenthood for their welfare. On July 22, 1925 he was married to Miss Dora Leisy, who now remains with the children to carry on both with sorrow because of his early departure and under the inspiration of a good life.

Mr. Haury met death as the result of an accident at the age of 52 years, 4 months and 5 days. Besides his wife and three children he leaves his aged father, five sisters and four brothsr [sic] and many other relatives and friends who with the entire community, have occasion to be saddened by his untimely going and who will continue to be blessed as a result of his God fearing manly life.
