Teacher, Church Worker Died

Cochranville, Pa. — Elam Beiler Hartz, 63, well known public school teacher and church worker of Manatawny, died Nov. 22 in the Reading hospital of a heart ailment

He and his family were the first Mennonite family to move to Oley Valley in the late 30's. The brick church house which he helped to build there was dedicated only recently. His funeral was the first held there, and his body was the first to be laid to rest in that cemetery.

Bro. Hartz traveled through the West as a young man and attended Hesston college. He had taught in public schools for nearly 40 years and was teaching when he became ill. He also served as Sunday school superintendent and Sunday school teacher for many years.

Surviving him are his wife Malinda: two daughters, Pearl at home and Lena, a student at Goshen college: one son, Jacob, at home: two brothers and two sisters, Amos, Ira, Mrs. Lydia Stoltzfus and Mrs. J. M. Mast.
