FATHER AND SON KILLED WHEN TRUCKS COLLIDE NEAR MOUNDRIDGE

The collision of two trucks at an intersection south of Moundridge on the Halstead-Moundridge road Tuesday afternoon claimed the lives of Elmer F. Harms, 40, and his ten-year-old son, James, of east of Newton. The boy was instantly killed and his father died Wednesday morning at Mercy Hospital, Moundridge.

Double funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock at the Zion church, Elbing, with Rev. Waldo Kaufman and Rev. J. J. Voth officiating.

— A large number of relatives and friends attended funeral services at the Zion church in Elbing last Friday for Elmer F. Harms, 40, and his son, James E. Harms, 10, who were fatally injured June 10 when their pickup truck was hit by a loaded sand truck at the Harvey-McPherson County line south of Moundridge. They had just left the home of Mr. Harms' brother, Irvin, and were traveling east when struck by the sand truck, which was going north. Officiating at the funeral were Rev. Waldo Kaufman, the pastor, and Rev. J. J. Voth of North Newton. Survivors include the wife and mother, the former Edna Waltner, and daughters Patricia Ann and Donna Sue; Mr. Harms' parents, Mr. and Mrs. Leonard O. Harms of Newton, and his four brother and three sisters.

JAMES ELMER HARMS

James Elmer Harms, son of the late Elmer F. Harms, and Edna Waltner Harms was born on June 26,1947 at the Halstead Hospital, Halstead, Kan. He went to be with the Lord at 1:30 p.m., June 10, 1958, as a result of a truck collision. He reached the age of only 10 years, 11 months and14 days.

He was a student at Elbing grade school where he had just completed his fifth year. He especially enjoyed this past year and greatly appreciated the birthday party which was held in his honor on the last day of school. He enjoyed Sunday School and participated actively.

He was a very happy and energetic child, having great interests in outdoor life. James, or “Jimmy” as all of his friends called him, was a great sports enthusiast, being expecially interested in football and fishing and had outstanding abilities along those lines. He enjoyed life and made life enjoyable for those with whom he came in contact. His winning smile and pleasing personality will be missed by all who knew him.

He leaves to mourn his early departure his sorrowing mother, two loving sisters of whom he was very fond: Patricia Ann, 15, and Donna Sue, 4; his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Leonard O. Harms of Newton, and Mrs. P. A. Waltner of Moundridge; 12 uncles and 12 aunts, 26 cousins, and a host of friends.

He was preceded in death by one grandfather and one grandmother.
